Books Upstairs are delighted to present an afternoon event with authors Mary Rose Callaghan, Phyl Herbert and Liz McManus from 2.30pm on Sunday 28th January. Admission is free and all are welcome.

Author Bios

MARY ROSE CALLAGHAN was born in Ireland but lived for many years in the United States, where she taught at the University of Delaware. She was a winner in the first Arlen House short story competition. As a result her first novel, Mothers, was published. She has written eight more novels, two of which have been translated into German and Danish, and assisted her late husband, Robert Hogan, in editing The Dictionary of Irish Literature. She is also a playwright and biographer, and an award-winning short story writer. Her collection Awkward Women was published recently by Arlen House. Her memoir, The Deep End, is available from Menma Books.

PHYL HERBERT’s debut collection of short stories ‘After Desire’ was published in May, 2015 by Arlen House. Her writing career took off after she completed an M.A. in Creative Writing in Trinity College in 2008. Phyl worked as a teacher of English and Drama in both the Prison Service and Liberties College. She has written plays and text books on the subject of ‘Drama in Education’. The Price of Silence, a memoir was published by Menma Books in November, 2023.

LIZ MCMANUS worked as an architect in Derry, Galway, Dublin and Wicklow. First novel Acts of Subversion (1991). She is winner of the Hennessy New Irish Writing, Listowel Short Story and Irish PEN awards. She has written two novels, A Shadow in the Yard (2015) and When Things Come to Light (2023). A parliamentarian for 19 years. Minister for Housing and Urban Renewal (1994-97). Campaigner for the rights of women and of travellers. Currently a PhD student at UL.
